Hello people!

So, I’ve got some exciting experiences to share! About half a year ago, I made the switch from DevOps to TestOps, and I’m loving it.

Let's deep dive into how it all went down and why this move hits just right for me.

The Backstory

Let’s rewind for a second.

I started my tech journey as a DevOps engineer after a month-long bootcamp called "The ContainerKlas". It was a mix of different technologies and programming languages like Python, Java, Linux, AWS, ...

I started strong in the cloud automation space, working with Bulls-I (shoutout to my OG team!). But after about a year and a half of living the DevOps life, I started getting that “something’s missing” feeling. While I loved the automation and infrastructure side of things, I found myself missing the coding days.

So, just as I was figuring out my next move, I had a talk with Patrick, and everything just clicked. After a chill interview in which Patrick and Koen introduced me to the world of test automation, I was sold.

Why Test Automation?

Switching from DevOps to test automation might seem like a plot twist, but hear me out!

Test automation is the perfect mix of coding, problem-solving, and a focus on quality. It’s like I get to keep all the things I love about DevOps (automation, duh), but now I also get to flex my coding skills again.

What’s even cooler is that test automation isn’t just about testing — it’s about understanding the entire stack. So, my DevOps background? Still super useful because I can bring that full-stack mindset to the table.

Smooth transition

Can we talk about how smooth the transition was? Switching jobs within the Slingshot group was a breeze — no paperwork drama, no extra steps. I got to keep my car(win!), and the new role just fell into place. The team at b.ignited has been super supportive, and I instantly felt welcome. Plus, it’s such an open learning environment. Like, I’m not scared to ask questions — even if they feel “basic.” Their vibe is all about growth.

The Best Part? The People!

One of the best things about b.ignited has to be the people.

Seriously, my coworkers are all crazy talented, and each of them brings something unique to the table. You’ve got Jeroen, our frontend expert and code review wizard —he gives great feedback and always has tips to improve your code.

Merlijn? An absolute TypeScript king —if it’s about TypeScript, he's got you covered. There’s also Mats, who’s all about mocking and unit testing and runs meetings as the pro he is. He's great at leading discussions on problem-solving strategies, and we always leave those meetings with clear action steps.

And let’s not forget Koen and Thomas, who have taught me so much about AWS—even with my DevOps background, these two still manage to blow my mind with their AWS knowledge.

Then there’s Roland, who has an amazing eye for UI/UX design. He’s also a total Playwright expert—like, he knows everything about it inside out. If you ever have a weird code issue, Roland will figure it out in no time.

And I can’t forget Muskaan! She’s honestly the happiest person I know, always bringing positive energy. She’s super supportive and just one of those people who makes the workspace feel warm and welcoming.

But it’s not just about what they know—it’s how they support you.

Everyone at b.ignited is great at giving feedback, and advice, and just being there when you need them. It’s a super supportive environment where you’re encouraged to grow and get better at what you do. Whether it’s technical guidance or just chatting through a tricky client situation, I always feel like I’ve got a team behind me.

The "Meter Peter-schap": Next-Level Coaching

Another thing that really sets b.ignited apart is the "Meter Peter-schap". It’s this awesome system where you get paired with your own personal coach. Mine is Dorien, and she’s amazing, shout out to her cause I love her.

She gives me both technical advice (think: testing tips, and strategies) and professional guidance, like how to handle certain situations with clients. We have a weekly meeting, and she’s always there when I need her. Having that kind of mentorship is such a game-changer.

Learning, Growing, and Thriving

In test automation, it’s all about staying curious and constantly learning. New tools, new frameworks, new ways of thinking — it’s a continuous process, and that’s what keeps me excited every day. Workshops, learning sessions, trying out new tech—I’m here for it. And the workshops at b.ignited are top-tier.

Every month, we have a day dedicated to learning something new that a tester might need, and sometimes it’s even mixed up with fun challenges like quizzes or hackathons. It’s learning, but it’s fun, and you always walk away with new skills.

Also, I get to see how my work impacts the bigger picture, which is a super satisfying feeling. There’s something about knowing your work is helping improve quality, streamlining processes, and keeping projects running smoothly. It just hits differently when you know your work makes a tangible difference.

Final Thoughts: My journey

For all others out there thinking about a career switch, don’t be afraid to explore new paths. Whether you’re in DevOps, full-stack, or just starting your tech journey—sometimes taking that leap can lead you exactly where you need to be.

Switching from DevOps to test automation wasn’t something I originally planned, but it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. I get to dive deep into code again, while also using everything I learned from my DevOps days. It’s a win-win.

So, if you’re curious about test automation, or just want to try something new in your tech career—go for it! The possibilities are endless.
