How to run two Teams accounts at the same time?

As a consultant, it just so happens you could be part of multiple Teams, and we've all heard this excuse before: "I didn't see that message on Teams because I was logged in on another account". The goal of this blog is to solve that by highlighting solutions. This way you can have multiple accounts on Teams running at the same time on your computer or smartphone.

The easiest way to solve this issue, is to open the web and desktop version on your computer. On the mobile version, you can easily have multiple accounts logged in at the same, as we will see later.

What is Microsoft teams?

Microsoft Teams is a chat program, mostly included in Office 365 licenses. On the application you can chat, video call and work together with colleagues and external people. Right now, it is one of the most popular programs used in businesses.

Having multiple accounts on your mobile device enables you to receive all messages from different accounts and switch easily between them by just clicking on the one where you received the message on.

How to add an extra account to your Teams app

Adding an extra account to your application can be done in a few steps:

  1. Open the Teams-app

  2. Click on your profile picture or the ‘more’ button

  3. Click on “Add account” in the popup window

  4. Fill in the required form to add another account to the application.

Switching between accounts on Teams can be explained in 3 simple steps:

  1. Open the Teams-app

  2. Click on your profile picture or the ‘more’ button

  3. Under accounts and organizations, you can see the account you want to switch to.

Time to tackle Teams on your PC now that we’ve got your smartphone all set up. There are several ways to go about running multiple Teams instances on your PC.

Solution 1: Use the desktop application and the web application

The easiest solution is to log in to the desktop application with an account and then go to teams.microsoft.com, open the web application and login with another account.

Solution 2: Install the web application as an application on your personal computer

A second solution is to install the web app as an application on your desktop. The only thing you need to consider is that you need a Chromium-based browser, in this tutorial I am using Edge.

  • open teams.microsoft.com

  • In the right corner of the app, you’ll see 3 little dots of the browser. Be sure you clicked on the dots of the browser and not those of the Teams app. In the menu that just opened you’ll find ‘Apps’, if you hover over it, a second menu will appear and show you the possibility ‘Install this site as an application’.

  • Once you clicked on it, you will have to verify that you want to install this app. You can also give the app your own name. After the installation is done, you’ll see a screen saying that the app is installed.

In this pop-up window you can choose if you want to add it to your taskbar or as a shortcut on your desktop.

  • After you installed the application, you can open this as many times as you want, and login different accounts on multiple instances of the app.
